Newborn Layette Checklist

bookcover
Here's a checklist of must-have items for your new baby.

3-6 Receiving Blankets: Most newborns love to be swaddled.

4-8 Bodysuits: Also called Onesies, these T-shirts snap between the legs. Buy them in size small (3-6 months) and layer them under receiving blankets or sleepers. You could also buy side-snap or tie T-shirts, but they ride up.

4-8 Sleepers or Stretchies: Your newborn will live in these one-piece pjs day and night. The small size (3-6 months) should be fine for the first few months.

2-4 Infant Gowns (Kimonos): These look like long nightgowns and make diaper changes a snap, especially in the middle of the night. They come only in newborn sizes. Look for an elastic bottom, without strings or ties that can be choking hazards.

No-Scratch Baby Mittens: Good if you're reluctant to cut your baby's tiny fingernails and want to prevent scratches. Still, they can be hard to keep on.

3-6 Coveralls or Rompers for Play: These are like stretchies, but without the feet and a little dressier for daytime and excursions. Go for the medium size (6-9 months) since your baby will probably stay in sleepers day and night for the first few months.

1-2 Sweaters: Buy cotton for summer, fleece for winter—both are nice and soft. A cardigan is easier to manuever in the first few months.

3-6 Pairs of Booties or Socks: Use these with non-footed clothing or with a nightgown on chilly nights. Make sure the elastic is not too tight around the ankles.

1-2 Outdoor Hats: A wide-brimmed cotton hat or baseball cap is nice for summer, a fleece hat with ear and neck flaps is comfy in winter.
