Dealing with Insomnia

bookcover
Insomnia in late pregnancy is caused by a combination of general discomfort, difficulty finding a comfortable sleeping position, the baby's pressure on the bladder requiring frequent urination, and the body's natural tendency to disrupt sleep in late pregnancy (in an attempt to prepare for baby's two-hour feeing cycles).

How to get to sleep:

  • At bedtime, turn off the lights and television
  • Try a turkey dinner or a glass of milk. (Tryptophan, the amino acid found in milk and turkey has been found to be an extremely effective sleep aid.)
  • Avoid chocolate and cocoa, as these contain caffiene.
  • Try music. Many couples find that music lulls their baby to sleep.
  • Take naps during the day or early evening. The key is to get sleep whenever possible.

Some pregnant women wake up at night with heart palpatations, heavy prespiration and a concerned feeling. What causes this? You may have simplly changed position in your sleep and ended up flat on your back. When pregnant women lie flat on their back, blood flow decreases to the baby and to the mother's brain. The decreased blood flow wakes her up so she changes position. This natural phenomenon is the reason pregnant women need not be concerned about accidentally shifting to a flat position as they sleep.

When to get more help? If you can't sleep for three nights in a row, discuss this condition with your physician.

Take a Power Nap

Along with a stronger stomach for yucky stuff, being a mom gives you the ability (and excuse) to take power naps: 20-minute bursts of pure, de-stressing sleep. As long as you are not behind the wheel of a moving vehicle, nor in sole command of an infant while in an upright position, almost any time and place can provide a power-napping opportunity.

Try it sitting in the glider as you rock your baby to sleep, while breastfeeding on the sofa, or while breastfeeding in bed!
